Looking for cars for my wife I was checking out Saabs and noticed something. I’m ashamed to say it but this kinda ruins the whole car for me.
The radio in the 9-3 is the same as my father-in-law’s Chevy Cargo vans.

At least it isn’t a bad looking radio
Pretty subdued on the button/screen clutter

When looking at cars I just prefer them to have a whole double-din unit because if its mine its coming out anyways

Just ignore the fact that every premium GM vehicle uses the same parts as the economy vehicles and you’ll be ok.

Pretty solid and easy to use, too. Probably one of my all time favorite OEM radios.

Pre-2007 9-3s have a non-corporate radio
2006 is the best year 9-3 to buy

Lol “Saab” and “premium”. Saabs as a premium marque is the biggest joke GM ever sold to anyone.

Or their economy cars just use the same high-end components their premium vehicles do!

Just buy a better radio for it? Looks like it’s probably a standard double-din, and at the very least, you know there should be easily findable adapters given that it’s used in a bunch of shitty GM cars.

Should we also ignore that Ferrari and Maserati have used parts found in the lowly Chrysler cars? I think that’s the bigger crime here.
![]() 06/11/2015 at 17:11 |

...And? It’s a radio, most likely not even made by GM.

Ferrari doesn’t do that, save for a radio. I’ve heard it’s really bad with Maserati though.

You could see it this way until you actually look at the parts.

Admittedly it looks better in the Saab than the Express Van...

Yes just a radio but it’s still a Chrysler part in a $250-300k car. Maserati is really bad for it. They share uConnect 8.4, window/lock switches, light controls, smart key systems and more.

Have you ever driven a Park Avenue Ultra? They’re criminally nice for the money. Heated seats and leather errywhere in a 97-05 model year? Impressive, and the power was immense back then.

Duesenberg used to make really good cars, too.

At least you had this:

It could be worse. Besides, the quirky control layout is more SAAB than corporate GM.

So? Except for ‘74 and earlier rivieras and grand nationals I don't give a fuck about Buick.

The radio sharing is literally what started this convo. GM, “lol they suck” FCA, “oh it’s only a radio”
Dude just stop.

That's fucking terrible. Like they are USELESS.

yes but it’s soooooo cool
![]() 06/11/2015 at 20:38 |

No. It isn't. It's flimsy, gets jammed easy, drops condensation into your stupidly placed ignition and is generally terrible.

yesssss but it does a flippy foldy thing look at it it’s like engineering porn

Me too. Just ew. Full of nopes. GM is awful. Kthxbai

Not a big deal, my 1990 Volvo had leather and heated seats.

When Ferrari starts using Chrysler parts other than a third party radio I’ll get back to you. Meanwhile, I can still get all my Chevy parts from a wrecked Buick, and I can bolt Escalade parts onto a Tahoe.

INTERCHANGEABLE PARTS. Shits been around since the late 18th century. I'm sorry you don’t seem to like them, but every single company does it, so stop acting like GM is terrible for it.

It’s cool when Jeep does it (or did it since they don’t anymore). It’s not cool when GM does it. It’s not cool when Nissan does it. It’s not even cool when Ford does it. You can’t sell cars at a premium and expect people to see the marque as premium when your parts guys are rummaging through bargain-brand barrels for turn signal stalks and interior bits.
Edit: I’m being an ass. But seriously, I don’t think it’s right that you pay a premium for a vehicle and the manufacturer uses less expensive parts to save a buck.

Pause the gif before the top part flips over and that’s what I had. Overly complicated flimsy crap. Ok, it would have been awesome if it worked.

Overly complicated flimsy crap is what Europe is good for.
The U.S. is good for overly simple flimsy crap.
